We all know what that means. Do you realize that it is nothing but acronyms? We use them so often that we barely stop to think about what they really mean. There are many such ones out there. This linguistic shortcut has become a profound part of modern communication. It’s truly fascinating to see how language has evolved in an efficient, fast-paced digital age. This clearly shows us that during those times, humans also found the need to save time and space, which has certainly been evident nowadays

Now, these kinds of conversations are truly important in healthcare, especially because this is how the acronym originally came about. I would think so, because it would make the conversation a lot less tedious than it should be.

In simple explanation, an acronym is basically formed by taking the first letters of a group of words and creating a new word that is made as word. For example, NASA, which is the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and many other forms like Wi-Fi, a USB, PDF. There are many, many, so many examples in the education field, the business, and in our everyday life.

Abbreviations, on the other hand, are nothing but short-form words, which is taken from the first letters, but they do not always form a pronounceable word. For example, doctor would be like tr, feb, february would be like feb, there are so many differences.

The difference between an acronym and an abbreviation, an acronym is basically a mixed word. We call that word an acronym, as in a whole, like UNICEF, NASA, and NATO. Abbreviation is a short form, like for example, doctor, dr, mr, st, etc, there are so many different other words. Now, ATM, on the other hand, is a mixed example. ATM is an automatic teller machine, which is an acronym, but is often treated like an abbreviation in speech, because that's how we usually refer to it; we don't usually see it as an abbreviation, we call it ATM. So this is just to give clarity why the difference between these two.

Now, why does this matter? It matters because it makes our communication between people a lot faster. It helps us to reduce or make our conversations less repetitive and monotonous, and definitely more memorable at the same time. Let me show you a few examples, many new acronyms, which we have to use in the professional field, the education and healthcare, so that will give you a general idea, so you can contribute to your learning as well, or it could be even in a simple text just to give you a context.

JOMO is the joy of missing out. This is the opposite of FOMO, which is fear of missing out. It is a great one to use when you're happy to stay in and relax instead of going out.

TL means too long,

DR means didn't read. Perfect to summarize a lengthy article or email for someone short on time.

SMH, which means shaking my head. A simple way to express disapproval or exasperation without writing a whole sentence.

IDK, which is I don't know. A quick and easy way to admit you're not sure about something.

ICYMI, in case you missed out, which is a very common way to share communication amongst the community without being too formal.

TBH, to be honest, which makes it hard to keep up with modern conversation, especially in a group. These are the ones I want you to learn and then the basics like B-R-B and we already know.

AFAIK: as far as I know. Use this when you're giving information but aren't 100% sure. for example, AFAIK, the library is open until 9pm tonight.

IYKYK, if you know, you know. A very fun one to use when you make a reference or an inside joke, especially to a group of people you understand. For example, that whole conversation was just a series of IYKYK moments.

NGL, Not gonna lie. A way to introduce a candid, honest opinion. For example, NGL, I'm a little tired of this heat.

IRL In real life. This is used to distinguish between a digital interaction and an actual physical one. For example, I've been friends with that person for years, but we have never met IRL.

OOTD, which is outfit of the day. A very classic approach when it comes to our social media, often used with a picture of what you are wearing.

ICYMI in case you missed it. It is perfect for sharing something truly important that is interesting and might have been overlooked. For example, ICYMI, they just released a trailer for the new movie.

POV, which is the point of view, as you see on social media. That's people's opinion.

For professional and work-related,

ASAP, which is as soon as possible. A classic way to convey urgency. For example, please send me that report ASAP.

EOD, end of day, which is used to set a deadline or to set a deadline at the end of the day. For example, can you have the final draft ready by EOD?

ETA, which is estimated time of arrival, is used in the airports or any travel areas. Useful for travel and project timeline,s especially.

WIP, which is work in progress, which basically tells that the work is not yet completed. For example, I will share a WIP document with you for feedback.

TBD / TBA, which is to be determined / to be announced. For example, can we use when a detail isn't finalized? Yes. For example, the venue for the event is TBD.

CC / BCC, which is carbon copy / blind carbon copy, which is very essential for email etiquette. This tells you who is on the email chain.

KPI, which is key performance indicator, a very important and crucial business term which refers to a metric to use to measure success. For example, our main KPI for this quarter is to increase customer satisfaction by 10%.

GOAT, which is the greatest of all time, which is to describe some one who is at the best of what they do. For example, Michael Jordan is the GOAT of basketball.
